CAN Condemns Brutal Killing of 16 Hunters

    Share

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the brutal killing of 16 hunters by a mob in Uromi, Edo State, calling it a grave violation of human rights and a clear sign of the growing lawlessness in Nigeria. The hunters, who were on their way from Port Harcourt to Kano to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, were mistaken for kidnappers due to the traditional hunting tools they were carrying. They were beaten and burned alive, denied any chance of due process in a shocking act of mob violence.

In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN called for a full investigation into the killings and demanded justice for the perpetrators. The association also expressed deep sympathy to the families of the victims, urging the Nigerian government to take decisive action to restore trust in the legal system and address the growing security crisis that has led to such incidents.

The tragic incident occurred just days before the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr, a major Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan. According to reports, the 16 hunters, who were from different parts of Nigeria, were traveling with their traditional hunting equipment when they were attacked by an angry mob in Uromi, a town in Edo State. The hunters were mistaken for kidnappers due to their hunting tools, which led to the mob’s violent reaction.

Without any investigation or attempt to verify their identity, the men were subjected to a brutal beating and then burned alive in an act of extrajudicial violence. The mob denied them the opportunity to defend themselves or present any evidence to prove their innocence, leading to a senseless and horrific loss of life.

CAN has described this act as a severe violation of human rights, emphasizing that the rule of law must be upheld in Nigeria. The association has called for a thorough government investigation into the incident and for those responsible to face the full force of the law.

In the statement, CAN expressed its profound sympathy to the families of the victims and condemned the lawlessness that continues to plague Nigeria. The Christian body acknowledged the difficult and challenging times Nigerians are facing, particularly the security threats posed by rampant kidnappings and violence, which have created a climate of fear and distrust in many communities.

“These tragedies inflict profound pain and could erode trust in our legal system, highlighting the urgent need for effective law enforcement and the upholding of the rule of law,” the statement read. “The government must act decisively to address these failures and ensure justice is served.”

The association urged the Nigerian government to act swiftly to investigate the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice. CAN also stressed the need for greater accountability in addressing extrajudicial violence, which continues to undermine the legal process and the safety of Nigerian citizens.

While condemning the violence, CAN also took the opportunity to extend its warm felicitations to Muslims across the country on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr. The Christian body recognized the significance of the holiday, which marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection for Muslims.

“On behalf of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), I extend my heartfelt congratulations to our Muslim brothers and sisters on the joyous occasion of Eid-el-Fitr,” Archbishop Okoh said. “As Christians, we deeply resonate with these practices, sharing with our Muslim neighbors the values of prayer, fasting, charity, and community.”

Despite the joyous occasion, CAN highlighted the various challenges facing Nigeria, including economic difficulties, soaring inflation, and widespread unemployment. The statement also noted the increasing security threats that have made many Nigerians fearful of their safety.

“Security threats, such as rampant kidnappings and violence, cast a shadow over our communities. Economic difficulties, including soaring inflation and widespread unemployment, place immense burdens on countless families. Social unrest, fueled by these and other grievances, continues to test our resilience,” the statement explained.

In light of the tragic killings, CAN has called on Nigerians to unite for peace and security. The association emphasized the need for all citizens to practice charity, support those in need, and stand together against violence and division. CAN also urged leaders at all levels of government to promote understanding and work toward reducing social unrest and insecurity.

“We must not succumb to despair. Instead, let this moment spur us to unite for peace and security,” CAN’s statement read. “Leaders at all levels must also promote understanding and reject mob actions.”

The Christian association further called for greater interfaith dialogue and cooperation, stressing the importance of fostering mutual respect between Muslims and Christians in Nigeria. CAN reaffirmed its commitment to working together with Muslim leaders to strengthen the bonds of peace and unity in the country.

“As we extend our goodwill on Eid-el-Fitr, let us embrace compassion, forgiveness, and mutual respect—values that can lead us toward a Nigeria where every life is cherished and protected,” Archbishop Okoh said.

The brutal killing of the 16 hunters highlights the broader issue of insecurity in Nigeria. Over recent years, the country has seen a rise in mob violence, kidnappings, and extrajudicial killings. The failure of the Nigerian police and other security agencies to adequately address these issues has led to widespread lawlessness, where people take matters into their own hands without recourse to the justice system.

The increasing mistrust in the legal system, combined with growing frustration over Nigeria’s security situation, has created an environment where individuals and groups feel that they can act without fear of repercussions. This trend is particularly concerning, as it undermines the rule of law and exacerbates the country’s existing challenges.

For Nigeria to move forward, experts argue that a greater focus must be placed on restoring public trust in the legal system, addressing the root causes of insecurity, and ensuring that the government is held accountable for its actions. The tragic killings in Uromi are a stark reminder of the urgent need for reform and stronger law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians, regardless of their background or identity.
