Nigeria and Sweden have committed to deepening their diplomatic and economic ties, with a focus on trade, innovation, gender equality, and sustainable development. This pledge was solidified during a high-level meeting between Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The Crown Princess is currently on a three-day official visit to Nigeria aimed at enhancing the relations between both countries.

During the meeting, Vice President Shettima highlighted Nigeria’s strong commitment to being a reliable ally of Sweden in various sectors, with a particular focus on innovation and development. He stated that the partnership between the two nations would be “anchored in innovation, powered by people, and guided by our shared determination to uplift communities and secure prosperity for generations to come.”

The visit of Crown Princess Victoria was hailed as a significant step towards strengthening ties, particularly in areas such as renewable energy, precision agriculture, healthcare innovation, and gender inclusion. Shettima described the visit as not just a continuation of diplomatic dialogue but a new chapter in the relationship between both nations. He highlighted the importance of fostering business-to-business collaborations and promoting greater cultural exchange.

“The visit opens the door to deeper institutional ties, stimulates business-to-business collaboration, and fosters greater cultural exchange,” Shettima said. “We are particularly excited about the opportunities in sectors where Sweden has much to offer, and Nigeria is eager to learn.”

Vice President Shettima also recalled his visit to Stockholm in October last year, when he represented President Bola Tinubu in meetings with Swedish officials, including Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and leaders from Swedish industry. He noted that the visit was a turning point in the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Sweden, resulting in tangible collaborations, such as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Nigeria and Ericsson to support 5G innovation in the country.

“These meetings were not ceremonial; they were catalytic,” Shettima explained. “They opened doors to strategic collaborations and renewed our commitment to making Nigeria a fertile ground for innovation, investment, and sustainable development.”

In addition to the 5G partnership with Ericsson, Shettima highlighted Swedish companies like SchoolTry, an edtech firm, which is helping to transform educational outcomes in Nigeria. He described these collaborations as “building blocks” for a broader and more robust partnership between the two nations, one that positions Sweden as a key player in Nigeria’s digital inclusion efforts, educational reforms, sustainable agriculture, and clean energy transition.

Crown Princess Victoria expressed Sweden’s strong interest in Nigeria, emphasizing the vast opportunities available for further cooperation. “We have been talking about Nigeria and Sweden now for a few days, and it’s wonderful to see the opportunities here,” she said. “It is particularly important during the times we live in now.”

She also proposed that Sweden should establish a physical trade office in Nigeria, noting that this step should have been taken long ago. The establishment of such an office would further solidify the economic ties between both countries, especially in the context of increasing Swedish interest in Nigeria’s innovation and technology sectors.

Sweden’s Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, Andreas Carlson, also spoke positively about the partnership, particularly in the fields of innovation and technology. He pointed to the five innovation hubs Sweden has established across Africa, with the largest located in Lagos, Nigeria. Carlson stressed that these hubs, along with other potential collaborations, would benefit both nations and help shape a better future for their people.

“We see significant opportunities in Nigeria when it comes to innovation, the tech sector, and various skills where we can learn from each other,” Carlson said. “We are excited about the future, especially in health, agriculture, and other sectors.”

The bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Sweden dates back 65 years, and the recent discussions have further reinforced this long-standing partnership. Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tugga, provided insights into the ongoing discussions between the two countries, which include trade, investment, agriculture, green energy, and ICT. He also highlighted the importance of fostering employment opportunities for skilled workers in Nigeria, particularly through business outsourcing and structured partnerships with countries interested in Nigeria’s human capital.

Tugga further emphasized that Nigeria’s Technical Aid Corps would collaborate with interested countries to provide skilled Nigerian workers for various projects, thus reducing regional migration and contributing to the country’s economic development.

Gender equality was also a major focus of the discussions. Crown Princess Victoria, a prominent advocate for women’s rights, highlighted the importance of Sweden’s partnership with Nigeria in advancing gender equality and empowering women. Both countries have agreed to explore ways to enhance opportunities for women in business, education, and leadership roles, aligning with Sweden’s global reputation for championing gender inclusion.
