The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismantled a notorious armed robbery gang, killing one suspect and arresting seven others during a tactical operation in Abuja.
Spokesperson for the command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday. She said the operation was carried out by the Scorpion Squad on May 15 after receiving credible intelligence about the gang’s planned attack in the Maitama area.
According to Adeh, the suspects opened fire on the police team, leading to a gun duel. One suspect was neutralised on the spot, while the gang leader and another member escaped with gunshot wounds.
Police recovered several items at the scene, including a 2004 Toyota Camry LE, a red boxer motorcycle, four AK-47 rifles, and rounds of ammunition.
Investigations revealed that the gang coordinated their operations using a WhatsApp group and received insider information from domestic workers employed in targeted areas.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, commended the operatives for their bravery and restated the command’s commitment to stamping out violent crime in the capital.
The arrested suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
