PDP Accuses Uzodimma of Stifling Imo Economy with Poor VAT Performance

    Share

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has criticized Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration, accusing it of crippling the state’s economy. The party’s allegations stem from recent data showing that Imo generated the lowest Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue in Nigeria during the first quarter of 2025.

According to the PDP, Imo’s VAT revenue for the period was a mere ₦2.34 billion, placing it 35th out of 36 states in Nigeria, just ahead of Taraba State, which generated ₦2.33 billion. In contrast, neighboring states such as Anambra and Ebonyi generated ₦10.73 billion and ₦7.43 billion, respectively, highlighting a significant disparity in economic activity.

The PDP argues that VAT performance is a reflection of a state’s economic health, as it indicates the level of business and consumer activity. The party contends that the low VAT revenue is indicative of a stagnant economy, with businesses struggling to thrive under the current administration.

Lancelot Obiaku, the PDP Publicity Secretary in Imo State, stated that “the state’s dismal VAT performance reflects the comatose state of its business environment and overall economy.” He further claimed that businesses are shutting down, and the state has failed to attract meaningful investments under Governor Uzodimma’s leadership.

Obiaku also criticized the governor for allegedly concentrating power and resources in his office, undermining the autonomy of ministries, agencies, and local governments. He claimed that despite receiving substantial allocations, local government chairmen lack the resources to implement impactful projects, as their funds are reportedly controlled and misappropriated.

The party urges the state government to take immediate action to address these challenges and implement strategies that will foster economic development and improve the living standards of the people.

The coming months will be crucial in determining whether the current administration can reverse the economic decline and set Imo State on a path toward prosperity.
