Ogun Govt Meets Fulani Leaders, Others to End Farmers-Herders Clashes

In a bid to prevent recurring clashes between farmers and herders during the dry season, the Ogun State Government held a crucial dialogue with Fulani leaders and pastoralist representatives from the state and neighbouring regions.

The meeting took place in Abeokuta over the weekend and included Serikis Fulani, zonal leaders, and community representatives. It aimed to find lasting solutions to the frequent disputes that often lead to violence and destruction of farmlands.

Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Inter-Ethnic Affairs, Alhaji Hadi Sani, said the dialogue focused on abandoning cultural practices that cause conflict and promoting peaceful coexistence. He stressed the need to use the current rainy season to prepare for the dry season, a time when tensions normally rise.

Sani said, “We want to take firm decisions that will bring peace to our society. We called on Fulani leaders to agree on sustainable ways to live peacefully with farmers.”

Ogun is adopting a non-violent approach by encouraging dialogue, sensitization, and the creation of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) that will guide relationships between communities. This strategy contrasts with other states experiencing severe violence from such conflicts.
