Afrobeat singer and activist, Seun Kuti, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of using his administration to shield corrupt politicians rather than serve the Nigerian people.
In a video that has gone viral online, the Grammy-nominated musician claimed the President’s tough economic policies have only worsened the lives of ordinary Nigerians, while protecting the political elite from justice.
Kuti said, “The only thing this President has done is cover up crimes upon crimes. And in order for those crimes to be covered up, the bravery needed to do that is wickedness.”
He argued that the economic hardship currently faced by citizens is not about reform or national interest, but about preserving the power and privileges of the political class.
Referring to the recent media chat by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, Kuti said Wike’s main concern was that the new opposition coalition might disrupt the existing power structure.
He alleged that Wike even revealed past corruption, claiming former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s wife allegedly collected N4 billion monthly during his tenure.
“Wike and other politicians supporting Tinubu are fighting to protect the status quo,” Kuti said. “He was basically asking the opposition if they want to scatter what’s protecting all of them—the political elite, not ordinary Nigerians.”
Seun Kuti urged citizens to listen more carefully to what politicians say and understand that many policies presented as reforms are, in his view, aimed at keeping the corrupt system intact.
