Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said that Nigerian lawmakers are in the Senate to serve the country and make sacrifices for future generations, not to enrich themselves.
Akpabio made the statement on Wednesday during the debate on a bill to amend the Electricity Act, 2023. The amendment seeks to improve policy and regulation, attract more investment, and address challenges in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA, Abia South), also aims to protect power infrastructure, improve community relations, and boost industrial development.
Speaking in support of the bill, Akpabio stressed the importance of electricity to national growth and economic development.
“People think we are here in the Senate to make money, not knowing that we are here to sacrifice for future generations,” he said.
He added that Nigeria’s future depends heavily on fixing the power sector, and expressed hope that the new bill would help achieve lasting improvements.
The proposed amendment is expected to clarify several areas of the 2023 Act, including transitional arrangements and the role of host communities in the electricity supply chain.
