WAFCON 2024: Ihezuo’s Late Goal Sends Super Falcons to Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s Super Falcons are through to the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Botswana, thanks to a late goal from substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo.

The match, played on Thursday night, was a cagey affair with both teams showing early determination. Nigeria had the edge in possession but struggled to break down Botswana’s well-organised defence.

The Falcons created their first real chance in the 23rd minute when Toni Payne set up Ashleigh Plumptre, whose shot missed the target. Payne herself came close to scoring later in the half but could not convert.

After a goalless first half, Super Falcons head coach, Justine Madugu, made three key changes. He brought on Chiwendu Ihezuo, Christy Ucheibe, and Esther Okoronkwo, replacing Asisat Oshoala, Toni Payne, and Rinsola Babajide.

The substitutions made a difference late in the game. With the clock ticking down, Okoronkwo whipped in a low cross which was calmly finished by Ihezuo in the 90th minute to secure the win.
