Portuguese top-flight club, Famalicão, have completed the signing of Nigerian striker, Umar Abubakar, from Lagos-based academy, Footwork FC.
The 19-year-old penned a five-year contract with the Primeira Liga club, in a deal reportedly worth €800,000.
Abubakar impressed last season while on loan at Belgian second division side, Jong Gent, where he scored 21 goals in 27 matches. His goals were key to the club’s promotion to the Belgian Challenger Pro League.
Despite his strong performance, Jong Gent chose not to sign him permanently, opening the door for interest from several clubs across Europe. Abubakar eventually chose to join Famalicão, managed by Hugo Oliviera.
With this move, Abubakar becomes the latest Nigerian talent to secure a place in European football, and expectations are high as he begins his new journey in Portugal.
