Afrobeats singer and activist, Seun Kuti, has criticized Nigerians who publicly celebrated the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, saying such reactions miss the real issues facing the country.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, Seun expressed disappointment over the celebrations that followed Buhari’s burial in Daura, Katsina State. He said true justice would have been holding the ex-president accountable while he was still alive, not rejoicing over his death.
“Buhari should have answered for his leadership while alive,” Seun said. “Now, we clap because he’s dead, but nothing really changes. His family still holds their wealth, and the system remains the same.”
Seun, the youngest son of late music legend Fela Kuti, also accused the government of mismanaging public funds. He claimed that huge sums of money were spent every month on Buhari’s medical care in the United Kingdom, while millions of ordinary Nigerians suffer under a poor healthcare system.
He condemned what he called the misplaced priorities of Nigerian leaders, saying they prefer to treat themselves abroad while leaving the people with underfunded hospitals at home.
“Taxpayers funded his treatment in the UK, yet people here can’t even see a doctor,” he said.
Seun’s comments have stirred conversation online, with many agreeing that the country’s leaders often escape accountability. Buhari, who ruled Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, died recently and was buried according to Islamic rites in his hometown.
