The National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Mr. Eze-Onyebuchi Chukwu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to begin the process of creating additional states across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones to correct what he described as a long-standing imbalance in representation.
In an open letter made public on Friday in Abuja, Chukwu argued that Nigeria’s current structure gives some regions more states—and by extension, more political power—than others, creating inequality in access to federal resources, appointments, and legislative representation.
While some geopolitical zones have seven states, others, like the South East, have only five. Chukwu believes this lopsidedness contradicts the principles of fairness and national unity.
“In a federation that seeks equity and unity, such lopsidedness undermines both. Let all regions be given seven states,” he said.
Chukwu, who also heads the Society Well-being Advocates of Nigeria (SWAN), compared the situation to a family where one person is rewarded simply for having more children, regardless of merit.
“It is not the will of God that one man receives more blessings simply because he married more wives and has more children,” he wrote.
He emphasized that creating more states in underrepresented regions should be the starting point of any serious national restructuring effort.
“We cannot claim to be one Nigeria when some are more represented than others at the table where decisions are made,” he added.
Chukwu urged President Tinubu to take bold and historic action, describing state creation as both an act of justice and a step toward lasting national cohesion.
