The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have conducted primary elections ahead of the upcoming House of Representatives by-election for the Garki/Babura Federal Constituency in Jigawa State.
The by-election was scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for August 16, 2025, following the death of the former member representing the constituency, Isa Dogon Yaro, who passed away on May 9, 2024.
Both primaries were held on Saturday in Babura Local Government Area. The NNPP conducted its primary at the party’s local secretariat, where Salisu Sabo was declared winner by the Chief Returning Officer, Muhammad Gako, after scoring 114 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Sabo promised to work closely with party members and the people of Garki/Babura to improve secondary education. He urged voters to choose candidates based on merit and their ability to deliver.
The APC primary was held at the Duplex in Babura, where Rabiu Garki emerged as the party’s candidate with 110 votes. The Chairman of the APC Primary Election Committee, Ismaila Gadaka, described the election as peaceful and transparent.
Garki thanked Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi and APC leaders for their support. He pledged to focus on youth employment and economic development in the constituency if elected.
Both parties are now set to face off in the August 16 by-election, with campaigns expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
