Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will regain its strength ahead of the 2027 general elections despite the exit of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his running mate in the 2023 polls, Ifeanyi Okowa.
Speaking on Sunday during an interview on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics,” the Benue South lawmaker described their departure as “good riddance to bad rubbish,” accusing both men of fuelling internal crisis that weakened the party after its loss in the 2023 presidential election.
“They were part of the problem. Their actions divided the party and affected our chances. Their exit gives PDP room to reorganize and move forward,” Moro stated.
He added that PDP still has strong members committed to its ideals and ready to rebuild the party into a credible opposition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Moro also criticized political parties pushing for another northern presidential candidate, warning that Nigerians had rejected a North-to-North power transition in 2023 when PDP fielded Atiku after President Buhari.
“The mood of the country does not support another northern presidency. It is time for fairness and equity,” he said.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders including Atiku, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai are reportedly aligning under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to create a strong front against the APC.
Despite these developments, Moro insists that the PDP can still reclaim its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.
