NLC Accuses Leaders of Looting Workers’ Contributions

    Share

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly accused the Federal Government and state governors of suppressing workers’ rights and mismanaging their contributions, describing it as “stealing workers’ sweat.”

NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, made the statement on Monday at the opening of the 21st Rain School of the NLC, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. He warned that Nigeria is heading towards tyranny if current trends continue.

According to Ajaero, the rights of workers to speak freely, gather, and participate in governance are under serious threat. He said the crackdown on unions and civic freedoms appears to be a calculated move to silence workers before the 2027 general elections.

“Our leaders have abandoned their duties. Instead of finding ways to reduce suffering, they are already focused on 2027 elections. Ordinary Nigerians and workers are left to suffer the effects of poor policies, insecurity, and hardship,” Ajaero said.

He added that many democratic institutions are being weakened, and workers are being punished for demanding fair treatment, while those in power focus on political games rather than governance.
