A top member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has said that Northern Nigeria would rather support former President Goodluck Jonathan than Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.
Sani, who served as media aide to former Vice President Namadi Sambo, made this statement on Saturday during an interview on Trust TV’s *Daily Politics*. He was reacting to reports that the PDP may be reaching out to Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, while also considering a possible return of Jonathan.
Sani argued that Jonathan is a safer option for the North because the law allows him to serve only one term of four years, unlike Obi, who could potentially run for two terms.
“Between somebody making a promise and somebody who is compelled by the law that he must leave, which one will you take?” Sani asked. “Jonathan must go after four years. Obi may promise, but a promise can be broken.”
He added that even though Obi is seen as a man of integrity, the North would be more comfortable with a candidate whose term limit is guaranteed by law.
The statement has sparked fresh debate within political circles as discussions around the 2027 elections begin to take shape. Goodluck Jonathan, who was president from 2010 to 2015, is yet to publicly indicate any interest in returning to power.
