The Federal Government of Nigeria has condemned anti-Nigerian chants by some Ghanaians who recently staged a protest demanding the mass deportation of Nigerians from their country.
The protest, captured in a viral video on July 28, 2025, showed demonstrators accusing Nigerians of being responsible for rising crime in Ghana. The video has since sparked heated discussions across West Africa.
In a swift response, the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the claims as “unfair, dangerous, and misleading.” She stressed that Nigerians are among the most hardworking and law-abiding immigrants in Ghana.
“It’s wrong to generalise. A few may be involved in crime, but the majority are peaceful and contribute to Ghana’s economy,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
She also addressed social media rumours that Nigerian-owned properties and shops were being attacked in Ghana. According to her, there is no verified evidence to support those claims, and people should avoid spreading panic.
“Let’s avoid unverified rumours that can cause panic or spark violence,” she warned.
Dabiri-Erewa added that the Nigerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs is already in contact with Ghanaian authorities to ease tensions and ensure the safety of Nigerians living there. She commended the efforts of both countries’ high commissions for acting quickly to calm the situation.
She urged citizens of both nations to reject hate speech and xenophobia, calling for peace and mutual respect across the region.
