Lagos residents will experience scheduled power outages every weekday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. starting July 28 until August 21, 2025. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigeria Independent System Operator (NISO) have approved a major maintenance upgrade on the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330 kV transmission line, operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The upgrade involves installing Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fibre cable, which will improve the power grid’s stability, reduce faults, and enhance communication across the electricity network. However, this work will affect power supply to many districts and suburbs of Lagos during the specified hours.
Affected areas include Ojodu, Oke-Ira, Agidingbi, Omole Phases 1 and 2, Iju, Berger, Magodo Phases 1 and 2, Ketu, Oregun, Ojota, parts of Agege, Ifako, Abule Egba, Ojo, Ikeja, Oshodi, Ayobo, Alimosho, Ogba, Alausa, and Ejigbo.
Electricity distributors Ikeja Electric and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) warned customers that irregular power supply may also affect other parts of the city as a knock-on effect of the maintenance.
The Omotosho–Ikeja West line carries power from the Omotosho Power Station in Ondo State to Ikeja, a major transmission hub in Lagos. The fibre-optic upgrade is expected to bring long-term benefits despite the current inconvenience.
Tips to Manage the Power Cuts
Keep Food Cold: Fill ice trays or freezer bags with water before the outage to keep food fresh longer.
Use a Generator: Small generators can power essential appliances. Fuel costs may be around ₦10,000 daily.
Solar Options: Battery backups and solar-charged inverters can run lights and fans. Prices range from ₦50,000 to ₦5 million depending on the setup.
Charge Devices Early: Charge phones and laptops ahead of the outage. Public charging stations are available but be cautious.
Plan Your Day: Schedule cooking, laundry, and other electricity-dependent tasks before 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m.
Lagosians are advised to prepare for the long daily blackouts and take steps to reduce inconvenience during the maintenance period.
