President Bola Tinubu has ordered the relocation of the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGoF) from the Federal Ministry of Works to the Presidency.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Although the minister did not give detailed reasons for the change, sources say the move is aimed at improving coordination in the use of geospatial data, which is increasingly vital for national planning, infrastructure development, and security operations.
The Office of the Surveyor-General is the federal government’s top mapping agency. It is responsible for producing and managing maps and geographic data used for land administration, construction, and security purposes.
Government insiders suggest the transfer aligns with President Tinubu’s reform agenda, which emphasizes better planning, digital tools, and direct presidential supervision of key technical agencies.
The relocation is expected to give the Presidency more control over how Nigeria’s geographic and mapping information is gathered and used, especially in areas like land use planning, infrastructure delivery, and national security.
