Northern CAN Leaders Visit Benue, Offer Solidarity Over Killings

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) from the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has shown strong support for Benue State amid renewed violent attacks.

Led by Rev. J.J. Hayab, a delegation of bishops, pastors, and Christian leaders from different denominations visited Governor Hyacinth Alia at the Benue Government House in Makurdi to express sympathy and solidarity.

The visit followed a recent condolence trip by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who also comforted victims and their families.

Governor Alia, visibly moved, thanked the visitors, saying their presence brought him and the people of Benue hope. “This is what Christianity means: ‘I am because you are, and you are because I am,’” he said, emphasizing that Benue is not alone in its struggles.

He urged Christian leaders to go beyond spiritual roles and actively participate in shaping Nigeria’s policies and governance, calling for their involvement at the decision-making “formula table.”

Rev. Hayab condemned the violence, insisting that the attackers should be called criminals, not herdsmen. “When terrorists kill sleeping children, women, and students, don’t call them herdsmen. Call them what they are—criminals,” he said.

He warned that the ongoing crisis in Benue, known as Nigeria’s food basket, threatens the country’s food security.

Rev. Jonathan Terwase Ugbede, Vice-Chairman of CAN in Benue, praised Governor Alia’s leadership, noting that workers are being paid and pensioners are cared for despite security challenges. “Our governor is a promise keeper,” he said.

The delegation included representatives from Catholic, Baptist, ECWA, PECAN, and White Garment churches, reflecting a united Christian front in support of peace in Benue State.
