Nigeria has lost one of its elder statesmen. Chief Audu Ogbeh, a former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, has died at the age of 78.

His family announced his death in a statement on Saturday, August 9, saying he passed away peacefully.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather; Chief Audu Ogbeh. He passed away on the 9th of August 2025 at the fulfilled age of 78,” the family said.

Describing him as a man of “integrity, service, and dedication,” the family expressed gratitude for the support they have received from friends, colleagues, and well-wishers. They also asked for privacy as they mourn their loss.

Chief Ogbeh was appointed Minister of Agriculture by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and served until 2019. He played a key role in policies aimed at improving Nigeria’s food production and rural development.

Before his ministerial role, he had a long career in politics, including serving as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the early 2000s. Known for his calm voice and strong values, Ogbeh was respected across party lines.

His death is a major loss to the country.
