Former senator, Shehu Sani, has criticised state governors for doing little to ease the growing hardship faced by Nigerians, saying they are escaping public anger while President Bola Tinubu takes the heat.
Sani made the comments in a post on Saturday on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, highlighting the rising cost of living following the removal of fuel subsidy.
According to him, while Nigerians are struggling to cope with high fuel prices and general hardship, the governors are “smiling to the bank” without taking enough responsibility.
In his words: “The Subsidy was removed. The People are bearing the brunt. The President is receiving the bashing. The Governors are receiving the alerts.”
The former Kaduna Central senator pointed out that public frustration is mostly directed at the president, while state governors, who also control large resources, remain silent and unaccountable.
Sani’s comments come at a time when many Nigerians are complaining about rising inflation, high transport costs, and food insecurity, worsened by the federal government’s decision to end fuel subsidies in 2023.
Since then, calls have grown for state governments to play a more active role in cushioning the effects of economic hardship on the masses.
