Fresh violence has erupted in Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, following clashes between herders and farmers that left one person dead and several animals killed.
The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident, which occurred in Kaduna village on Friday, August 9. According to the police, tensions flared after the body of a 40-year-old farmer, Irmiya Yohanna, was found in a farm area, sparking outrage among local residents.
Police spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakil, said the village head, Emmanuel Bulus, reported the victim missing on August 7. A search party later discovered Yohanna’s corpse in the bush.
A police team, led by Divisional Police Officer SP Fitoka Golda, visited the scene and moved the body to the Bogoro General Hospital, where a doctor confirmed him dead.
Wakil noted that preliminary investigations suggest the farmer was murdered by unknown persons. In retaliation, angry locals reportedly attacked nearby herders, stabbing about 20 cows and 19 sheep, while injuring many others.
The police intervened and managed to rescue about 249 cows from the scene. One suspect, Ahmadu Mairiga, was arrested in connection with Yohanna’s death.
Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, visited the area for an on-the-spot assessment and met with local leaders, including Fulani representatives (Ardos), traditional rulers, and Sayawa community leaders.
He also addressed residents at the Bogoro Divisional Police Headquarters, assuring them that investigations are ongoing and justice will be served.
The CP urged the community to remain calm and allow law enforcement to do its work, warning against further violence or acts of retaliation.
Clashes between farmers and herders have remained a recurring issue in parts of Nigeria, often triggered by disputes over land, grazing routes, or alleged attacks.
