Popular Nigerian comedian, Akpororo, has come out strongly in defence of Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), following online backlash over the cleric’s recent call for donations.
In a video that has since gone viral, Akpororo expressed shock at what he called growing disrespect for spiritual leaders on social media. He asked whether people had forgotten how to respect their elders.
According to him, Pastor Adeboye’s appeal for support was meant for his “sons” in the ministry and not for random critics on the internet. “If you are not one of his spiritual sons, why are you talking?” Akpororo asked, criticising those who he believes are using the issue to tarnish the pastor’s reputation.
He also addressed complaints from some attendees of the recently concluded RCCG Annual Convention, especially those who took to social media to lament about poor sleeping conditions. Akpororo reminded them that attending the convention was voluntary. “Did anyone force you to go?” he asked.
The comedian’s comments have generated mixed reactions online. While many praised him for standing by Pastor Adeboye, others accused him of ignoring more pressing issues in the country.
One commenter wrote: “Very well said. Dey your dey make Daddy GO dey him own.”
Another replied: “There are bigger problems in this country. Akpororo should speak about those.”
Pastor Adeboye, one of Nigeria’s most respected religious leaders, has led the RCCG for decades, with millions of followers around the world. Despite the online criticism, many see his request for donations as a call to his inner circle and not a general demand.
The debate continues online, reflecting a wider discussion about the role of religious leaders, public accountability, and the influence of social media in shaping public opinion.
