Former Governor of Sokoto State and serving senator, Aminu Tambuwal, has been arrested and is currently being interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.
Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that Tambuwal is being questioned over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals amounting to N189 billion during his tenure as governor of Sokoto State.
The EFCC has not yet issued an official statement on the arrest, but reports indicate that the probe is centered on suspicious financial transactions linked to state funds.
Tambuwal served as governor between 2015 and 2023 before winning a seat in the National Assembly. He was also a former Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The arrest has sparked political reactions, particularly from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has accused the EFCC of carrying out selective investigations aimed at opposition figures.
In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC claimed the recent wave of EFCC invitations to opposition politicians appears politically motivated.
The party also alleged that some of the cases being pursued are not based on fresh evidence but are old files being reopened without clear justification.
Tambuwal is a key figure in the opposition and has long been seen as a strong critic of the ruling party. His arrest may further fuel tensions over the independence and fairness of anti-corruption efforts in the country.
