EFCC to Arraign Internet Fraud Suspects Arrested at Obasanjo Library Hotel

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced plans to arraign 23 suspected internet fraudsters on Friday, August 15, in Lagos.

The suspects were among 93 people arrested last Sunday during a raid at a hotel located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) premises in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, made this known in a statement released on Thursday. He explained that the 23 individuals would be brought before Justice D. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi. The remaining suspects will be arraigned in batches at later dates.

According to the EFCC, the arrests followed credible intelligence, and the suspects were caught at a pool party believed to be a cover for cybercrime activities.

Oyewale clarified that the OOPL itself was not the target of the operation. He noted that the suspects used a hotel within the premises to carry out their illegal activities, mainly impersonation, identity theft, and other forms of internet fraud.

He also disclosed that most of the suspects had already confessed to the alleged crimes.

The EFCC has recently intensified its clampdown on cybercrime across the country, especially among young people, in response to rising cases of internet fraud.
