    Police Bust Quack ‘Ophthalmologist’ in Akwa Ibom

    The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested one Gabriel Gideon for posing as an eye specialist and treating hundreds of people with unapproved substances.

    The suspect, a native of Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, was caught after allegedly charging over 300 people in each of several villages ₦500 each to administer a mixture of olive oil, fruit juice, and water as a cure for eye problems.

    According to a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, Gideon was arrested on Thursday, August 14, 2025, in the Ikot Akpan Itam area of Itu Local Government.

    The arrest followed a tip-off from a concerned resident who reported suspicious medical practices in the area.

    “A fake medical doctor who parades himself as an ophthalmologist has been arrested for allegedly administering a mixture of unapproved substances to hundreds of people,” the police said.

    Investigations revealed that Gideon is not a certified medical professional. A team from the Ministry of Health has since confirmed that the substances he used are not approved for medical use.

    The suspect has confessed to the crime and is currently in police custody, while further investigation continues.

    The police advised the public to seek medical care only from qualified professionals and to report suspicious activities to the authorities.
