Former Osun State Governor and pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bisi Akande, has described the late former President Muhammadu Buhari as a patriotic leader whose legacy will endure for generations.
Akande spoke on Wednesday during a condolence visit to the Buhari family in Kaduna, expressing deep sorrow over the passing of the former president. Leading a delegation of political associates, the elder statesman referred to Buhari as “an angel in human flesh,” praising his character and contributions to Nigeria.
The former governor recounted how he first learned of Buhari’s death while he was abroad, a news that came as a shock to him.
“I first heard that he died when I was abroad. Before then, I met him in Daura after our feast, he was looking robust, healthy and very strong,” Akande recalled.
During their last meeting, Akande said Buhari showed no signs of illness, and the two shared a light-hearted moment about their respective homes.
“In a joke, I said I was going back to my village. He said he was enjoying his village in Daura. When he moved to Kaduna, I planned to visit him here, and then I heard he had travelled,” Akande explained.
The late Muhammadu Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, was widely respected for his commitment to fighting corruption and his military background. His death marks the end of an era for many Nigerians who viewed him as a symbol of discipline and patriotism.
Bisi Akande’s visit reflects the deep respect Buhari commanded among political leaders across party lines. As pioneer chairman of the APC, Akande worked closely with Buhari in shaping the party and Nigeria’s political landscape.
Akande’s heartfelt tribute paints a picture of a leader who remained connected to his roots and people until the end. His reference to Buhari as “an angel in human flesh” underscores the personal admiration and high regard many Nigerians, especially political peers, held for the late president.
The condolence visit in Kaduna was one of many from dignitaries and political figures mourning Buhari’s death. His passing has sparked nationwide reflections on his leadership and legacy.
As Nigeria bids farewell to one of its most prominent leaders, Akande’s words serve as a reminder of Buhari’s lasting impact on the nation’s history and future.
