Nigeria Immigration Hikes Passport Fees Effective September 1

    Share

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a significant increase in the fees for obtaining Nigerian Standard Passports. The new fee structure will take effect from September 1, 2025, and applies only to passport applications made within Nigeria.

This upward review comes as part of the Service’s efforts to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport, which is a crucial travel document for millions of Nigerians at home and abroad.

According to an official statement signed by ACI AS Akinlabi, the Service Public Relations Officer, the new passport fees will be as follows:

N100,000 for the 32-page passport, which is valid for 5 years

N200,000 for the 64-page passport, valid for 10 years

These fees represent an increase from the previous charges, reflecting the Immigration Service’s aim to improve the quality of passport production and processing.

Importantly, the fee increase will not affect Nigerians applying for passports outside Nigeria. Nigerian citizens living abroad will continue to pay the existing fees, which are:

$150 for the 32-page passport with 5-year validity

$230 for the 64-page passport with 10-year validity

This distinction is intended to ease the financial burden on Nigerians overseas who often rely heavily on passport renewals for travel and business purposes.

The Nigeria Immigration Service emphasized that the fee revision aims to strike a balance between delivering quality services and making passports accessible to all Nigerians.

In the statement, ACI Akinlabi said, “The Service reiterates its commitment to balancing quality service delivery with the need to ensure passport services are accessible to all Nigerians.”

This suggests that while fees are increasing, the Immigration Service plans to continue offering efficient and reliable passport processing to reduce delays and improve customer experience.

The decision to review passport fees comes amid rising costs of materials, technology, and security measures needed to produce secure and durable travel documents.

Nigerian passports require advanced security features to prevent forgery and illegal use. The government has been investing in modernizing passport production facilities and introducing electronic passport systems to meet international standards.

However, the previous fees charged for passports have remained unchanged for several years, making it difficult for the Immigration Service to cover the full cost of production and services.

Increasing passport fees is seen as necessary to maintain service quality and fund further improvements in Nigeria’s travel document system.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians. Some citizens understand the need for increased fees, citing improvements in passport quality and services. Others, however, have expressed concerns over the financial impact of the hike, especially for low-income applicants and those who apply frequently.

The Nigerian passport is an essential document for international travel, identification, and access to various services. Millions of Nigerians use their passports for work, study, tourism, and business across the globe.

With increased global travel security requirements, countries have tightened rules around passports and travel documents. Nigeria’s move to upgrade passport fees reflects a wider effort to keep Nigerian passports secure and internationally respected.

Nigerians seeking to apply for new passports or renew existing ones should note the new fees from September 1, 2025. Applications are usually processed at Immigration offices and passport application centers across the country.

Applicants are advised to prepare for the new fees and ensure they apply through official channels to avoid scams and fraudulent activities, which have been a concern in recent years.
