Two persons have been confirmed dead following an armed robbery attack in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. The tragic incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2025, along the Rore-Arandun highway.
The Kwara State Police Command, in a statement issued on Friday in Ilorin by its spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, described the incident as a case of armed robbery and culpable homicide.
According to the police, the robbers first targeted the residence of a businessman, Mr. Oyetoyan Dare. In the course of the attack, the victim’s private security guard, Mr. Wale Ajiboye, 40, was shot and killed while attempting to resist the criminals from gaining entry into the house.
“In the early hours of Thursday, armed hoodlums attacked the residence of Mr. Oyetoyan Dare. His private security guard, Mr. Wale Ajiboye, was fatally shot while trying to prevent the robbers from entering the premises,” the statement read.
In a related incident believed to be carried out by the same gang, a vehicle transporting farm produce from Ora in neighbouring Osun State was ambushed on the same Rore-Arandun route.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Mr. Taiye Yebi, 38, was unaware of the earlier robbery and drove straight into the scene. He was also shot and killed by the criminals. A passenger in the vehicle sustained minor injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
Police operatives were quickly dispatched to the scene, where they recovered both expended and live ammunition. The corpses of the two deceased victims were taken to the hospital morgue in the area.
SP Ejire-Adeyemi assured residents that investigations are ongoing to track down those responsible. She said the police are already working with relevant intelligence units and community leaders to gather more information.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Adekimi Ojo, has ordered a discreet investigation and increased patrols along major roads and communities within the local government area to prevent further attacks.
He also promised that the command will not rest until the culprits are arrested and brought to justice.
“We understand the fear and concern this incident has caused. I assure the people of Kwara that we are taking all necessary steps to ensure those behind this heinous act are identified and arrested. Patrols have been reinforced and normalcy has been restored to the area,” CP Ojo said.
Residents of Rore, Arandun, and surrounding communities have expressed shock over the incident and called for tighter security, especially along rural roads used frequently by traders and farmers.
The police have encouraged anyone with useful information to come forward, promising confidentiality and swift action.
