Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, has announced that he is taking a short break from public activities following medical advice. The popular politician disclosed this on Saturday via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, explaining that he had not been feeling well recently and was advised by his doctor to rest.
According to Obi, the decision came after he felt unwell during an event in Enugu on Friday. He said his doctor prescribed medication and advised him to take a day or two off to rest and recover.
“In obedience to the doctor’s advice, I will not be able to meet up with all my scheduled engagements within and outside the country this weekend,” Obi stated. “I sincerely apologise for any inconveniences this might cause and humbly plead for understanding.”
Despite his health challenge, Obi gave a rundown of his recent activities. On Friday, he was in Enugu where he spoke at a tourism event. From there, he travelled to Anambra State to visit the Good Hope Specialist Hospital in Isulo, Orumba South Local Government Area.
The hospital is being acquired by the Aguata Diocese of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), and Obi made an initial donation of ₦10 million to support the project. He described the Diocese’s plan to transform the hospital into a fully equipped health complex—including a School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Technology—as a step in the right direction.
“Healthcare is one of the most meaningful investments any society can make. I’m glad to support this initiative,” Obi said.
Obi, who is known for his frugal lifestyle and focus on health and education, has consistently advocated for increased investment in Nigeria’s health sector. He often visits hospitals and schools across the country, making donations and raising awareness on key development issues.
After visiting the hospital in Isulo, Obi proceeded to Owerri, the capital of Imo State, where he attended a dinner organised by Barrister Nnaemeka Maduagwu. The dinner was held in honour of former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
Obi’s decision to take a health break comes as a surprise to many of his supporters, who are used to his active public presence and tight schedule. However, many have taken to social media to wish him a quick recovery, praising him for being open about his condition and responsible enough to follow medical advice.
In a political environment where health matters are often kept secret, Obi’s transparency has drawn positive reactions. Some commentators noted that his openness sets a good example for public figures in Nigeria, especially considering past controversies surrounding the health of top politicians.
Peter Obi, who came third in the 2023 presidential election, has remained a key figure in Nigerian politics and continues to engage in national conversations, particularly on issues related to governance, economic reforms, education, and healthcare.
Though currently not holding any public office, Obi maintains a strong following across the country, especially among youths who supported his “Obidient” movement during the last elections.
His team has not released further details on his current health status, but from his statement, it appears the issue is not serious, and he is expected to resume his activities soon.
For now, his supporters and well-wishers await his recovery and return to his usual engagements.
