Final-Year Student Abandons Newborn in Nasarawa Bush

A newborn baby girl has been rescued after being abandoned in a bush in Akwanga, Nasarawa State.

The incident happened on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, near Hope Academy Primary School in the A. A. Koto area of the town. Residents who heard the baby’s cries quickly came to her aid and found her lying helplessly among the bushes.

According to the Nasarawa State Police Command, the baby was allegedly dumped by her own mother, a final-year student at the College of Education, Akwanga. The young woman, who is studying for her Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), was later arrested with the help of her friends and fellow students.

Although the police have not given full details about why the student carried out the act, the case is currently under investigation. The authorities say they will release more information as the inquiry continues.

This incident adds to the growing number of similar cases across the country where young women abandon or harm their babies shortly after birth. Social workers and community leaders have continued to raise concerns about the mental and emotional pressure faced by young mothers, especially students who may be hiding pregnancies or lack family support.

In a similar case earlier this year, a young woman named Maryam Atiku was arrested in Kebbi State after she allegedly buried her baby alive in a bush. Reports say she wrapped the baby’s neck with three pieces of cloth, covered the child’s mouth, and took her to Malam Yaro bush before burying her.

Many Nigerians have called on the government and school authorities to provide better support systems for young women, including access to counselling, health care, and safe delivery options. They say that more awareness is needed to prevent such tragic situations and protect the lives of innocent children.

The rescued baby in Akwanga is currently receiving medical attention and is reported to be in stable condition. Police say the mother will face charges after investigations are completed.
