Members of the Kebbi State Caucus in the National Assembly have called for the arrest and prosecution of former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), over allegations of inciting violence and disturbing public peace in the state.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Senator Adamu Aliero, who represents Kebbi Central, said Malami must be held responsible for the political violence that occurred in Birnin Kebbi last week.
Senator Aliero, who was joined by other senators and members of the House of Representatives from Kebbi, said Malami’s petition against Governor Nasir Idris was false and politically motivated. He accused the former minister of importing political thugs into the state to provoke unrest.
“The attention of the Kebbi State APC National Assembly Caucus has been drawn to a petition authored by Malami, dated 10th September 2025, in which he falsely accused Governor Nasir Idris and other political actors of importing thugs, foreign mercenaries, and arms into Kebbi,” Aliero said.
“We categorically state that these allegations are false, unfounded, and aimed at creating panic. Malami is trying to destabilise the peace and progress Kebbi has enjoyed under Governor Idris.”
Senator Aliero revealed that during a recent condolence visit, Malami arrived Birnin Kebbi with thugs hired from Sokoto, Koko, and Rara, who later attacked the APC State Secretariat with stones while chanting anti-government slogans like “One term.”
“This led to a violent clash with APC supporters — something we’ve never seen before in Kebbi politics. Our state has always been peaceful and known for mutual respect,” he said.
He insisted that the APC in Kebbi State has never been involved in violence or terrorism, and that Malami’s actions were designed to spread fear and false narratives.
The lawmakers also expressed full support for Governor Nasir Idris, saying he has made huge investments in security and worked closely with security agencies to keep the state safe.
“Kebbi remains one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria. This is due to the hard work of the Governor and the cooperation of our people,” Aliero added.
The Caucus said Malami’s petition was a smear campaign, and urged Nigerians not to take his claims seriously.
“Malami’s petition is nothing but a desperate attempt to remain relevant. Using terms like foreign mercenaries and terrorism without proof is dangerous and reckless, especially from someone who once held the position of Attorney General,” Aliero warned.
The lawmakers called on security agencies to invite Malami for questioning and ask him to provide evidence for his claims.
“Let him prove that we are importing arms. Let him show proof of any ties to terrorist groups. Otherwise, he should be prosecuted for spreading false information and inciting public unrest,” the Caucus declared.
Also speaking at the briefing, Senator Garuba Musa Maidoki, who represents Kebbi South, challenged Malami to produce any evidence backing his allegations.
“Malami’s house is just 50 metres from the APC secretariat. If APC was violent, we would have clashed before now. But nothing ever happened until he came with a convoy like he was campaigning,” Maidoki said.
He accused Malami of trying to provoke APC members with his “campaign-style visit” even though the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not declared the start of political campaigns.
Maidoki strongly denied the party’s involvement in any illegal activities.
“We are not violent people. We are against terrorism and any act that could destabilise Nigeria. Malami should stop making dangerous claims,” he said.
Senator Maidoki also praised President Bola Tinubu for the federal government’s success in reducing banditry in Kebbi State.
“Before, we had over 100 villages abandoned due to insecurity in my constituency. Today, people have returned. Yes, we still face challenges, but there’s clear progress. We won’t be part of anything that brings insecurity. We reject Malami’s claims.”
