Mourinho: I Don’t Live on Memories, I Want Wins

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has thanked Chelsea fans for their warm reception during his return to Stamford Bridge in Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League clash, but made it clear that he is more focused on winning matches than looking back on past glories.

Mourinho’s Benfica side lost 1-0 to Chelsea, courtesy of a Richard Rios own goal, in a tightly contested encounter. Despite the result, the home fans sang Mourinho’s name, a clear show of affection for the man who led them to three Premier League titles during two separate managerial spells.

The 62-year-old Portuguese tactician, who is widely regarded as one of Chelsea’s greatest managers, expressed appreciation for the love shown to him. However, he quickly reminded everyone that emotional connections are no substitute for victories.

“I don’t feed myself with these memories, I feed myself with victories, with results,” Mourinho said after the match.

“But I thank them [for singing my name], I did that on the pitch. When I am in London, I meet Chelsea fans every day on the street.”

This was not Mourinho’s first return to Stamford Bridge as an opposing manager. He previously brought Inter Milan to the stadium in 2010 and walked away with a win. However, since then, Mourinho has lost on his last seven visits as a visiting coach, a streak that continues to frustrate him.

Despite the loss, Mourinho’s Benfica remains in the mix to qualify from their Champions League group, though the road ahead is tough. For Chelsea, the win was crucial in boosting morale after recent struggles in domestic competitions.

Mourinho is no stranger to Stamford Bridge’s spotlight. His first spell at Chelsea (2004–2007) saw him win back-to-back Premier League titles. He returned in 2013 and won the league again in 2015. His legacy at the club remains strong among fans, many of whom still view him as the “Special One.”

While emotions ran high during his return, Mourinho made it clear that his focus is firmly on the present.

“Memories are good, but in football, results are better,” he said.
