Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has dissolved all statutory and non-statutory boards and commissions in the state, in what appears to be a major step towards restructuring his administration.
The announcement was made on Thursday in Uyo by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prince Enobong Uwah. According to him, the decision takes immediate effect, and affected officials have been asked to hand over all government properties in their possession.
Uwah explained that the governor acted in line with the Statutory Boards (Special Provisions) Law, 2023, which empowers him to make such changes in the state’s governance structure.
“The governor wishes members of the dissolved boards and commissions well in their future endeavours,” Uwah said. “He commends them for the roles they have played towards achieving the promises contained in the ARISE Agenda.”
He further directed all former chairpersons of the dissolved boards to hand over to the most senior civil servant in their various establishments without delay.
Though the move came suddenly, it was not entirely unexpected. Governor Eno had earlier hinted at a major shake-up during a media chat held in 2024 to mark the 37th anniversary of Akwa Ibom State’s creation.
At the time, the governor revealed that a dissolution of the state executive council, boards, and commissions was in the works. He assured the public that it was a normal part of government transition and not a reflection of poor performance by those affected.
“They have done well and contributed to our growth,” the governor had said. “But at the right time, we will hold a proper valedictory session to thank them.”
The latest move is seen by political observers as part of Governor Eno’s efforts to inject new energy into his administration and realign with key areas of his ARISE Agenda, which focuses on Agriculture, Rural Development, Infrastructure, Security, and Education.
While no names have been mentioned for possible reappointments or replacements, sources say a fresh round of appointments may follow in the coming weeks as the governor looks to reposition governance in the state.
The development has stirred quiet reactions across the state, with many insiders acknowledging it as a strategic reset aimed at improving service delivery and accountability.
Governor Eno, who came into office in May 2023, has repeatedly expressed his commitment to transparency, development, and continuity, promising to build on the achievements of past administrations while introducing new ideas.
