The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has confirmed that the death toll from a boat accident in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State has risen to 36.

The tragedy occurred on Tuesday when a boat carrying about 80 passengers capsized while traveling between the Akpu and Odumomo settlements in Kogi to Ilushi in Edo State.

According to NIWA, 40 passengers were rescued alive, but rescue teams are still searching for more survivors and victims. The boat was carrying women, children, and mourners returning from a burial ceremony in the area.

Williams Isaac, Head of NIWA’s Idah Station, gave the update during a broadcast on NTA’s News Xtra. He revealed that most of the victims came from Onugwa and other riverine communities within Ibaji Local Government Area.

Isaac assured that NIWA is working closely with local divers and emergency responders to recover bodies and provide support to affected families.
