Lagos CP Orders Probe into Student Tear-Gassing, Ikorodu Crash

The Lagos State Police Command has launched investigations into two troubling incidents involving police officers, both of which were captured in viral videos and have sparked public concern.

One video shows police officers allegedly tear-gassing students in the Alakuko area, while the other involves a road accident in Ikorodu that left two people injured.

In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, @LagosPoliceNG, on Friday, the command confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Owohunwa Jimoh, has ordered a full investigation into both cases.

The CP directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to lead the probe and ensure a thorough and impartial process.

Jimoh strongly condemned the actions of the officers involved in the Alakuko incident, describing their behaviour as “unprofessional and unacceptable.” He emphasized that such misuse of power would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

“The command frowns at any form of overzealousness by its personnel. Officers are expected to maintain professionalism at all times,” the statement said.

The video from Alakuko, which has circulated widely on social media, shows students in apparent distress as officers deploy tear gas. The exact reason for the confrontation remains unclear, but it has triggered outrage from parents, students, and civil society groups.

In the second incident, which occurred in Ikorodu, a police vehicle was reportedly involved in a road crash that injured two people. The police have not released full details of the crash but confirmed that investigations are underway.

CP Jimoh called on representatives of the victims of the Ikorodu crash to come forward and provide any useful information that could support the investigation.

“We are appealing to the victims or their families to assist with details so we can ensure justice is done,” the statement added.

The Lagos Police Command assured the public that the investigations would be transparent and that any officer found guilty of wrongdoing would face appropriate disciplinary action.
