Trump to Hamas: Moves Fast or Its’s ‘All Bets Off”

    Share

bvFormer US President Donald J. Trump on Saturday urged Hamas to act quickly after saying Israel had temporarily stopped bombing to allow a hostage release and peace deal to proceed.

In a post on his X account, Mr. Trump wrote that he appreciated the pause in bombing and warned that “Hamas must move quickly, or else all bets will be off.” He added that he would not tolerate delay and said Gaza must never again pose a threat.

Mr. Trump’s comments come amid reports of talks aimed at freeing hostages taken during the fighting and finding a temporary ceasefire. He spoke strongly, saying the process must move “FAST” and that “everyone will be treated fairly.”

The statement highlights the role of outside powers and former leaders in a conflict that has caused great loss of life and suffering. Nigeria’s many readers will recall that international pressure, diplomacy and emergency talks often play a part in ending or pausing violence in conflict zones.

The current fighting began after a major attack on Israel by Hamas, followed by heavy Israeli military action in Gaza. The fighting led to civilian casualties, displacement and international calls for urgent action to protect civilians and secure the release of hostages held in Gaza. Several efforts to negotiate temporary ceasefires and hostage exchanges have been reported in the past, led by regional and international mediators.
