The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested nine suspected cattle rustlers in Auyo Local Government Area as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle livestock theft and related crimes across the state.

The arrests, according to the command, were made on September 30, 2025, following credible intelligence received by the police. Operatives from Hadejia ‘A’ Division and Auyo Division carried out the operation at two separate locations.

In a statement released on Sunday, the spokesperson of the command, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, said the suspects were apprehended at an uncompleted building in Kantin Waje Quarters, Hadejia Local Government Area, and also at Kogin Dole near Wailari Village in Auyo Local Government Area.

Those arrested include six suspects from Malam Madori Local Government Area — Buhari Musa, Muhammad Abubakar, Abba Ibrahim, Shuaibu Musa, Mohd Abubakar, and Sule Isa — and three others from Zareku village in Miga Local Government Area — Isma’il Abdullahi, Abdullahi Suleman, and Salisu Usman.

Items recovered from the suspects include four cows, two goats, one sheep, and a dark green Golf wagon vehicle with tinted windows and registration number UBJ 835 XX, which is believed to have been used during the theft operations.

SP Shiisu noted that the suspects are currently in custody and undergoing further investigation. He assured that they will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is completed.

He also used the opportunity to warn individuals involved in cattle rustling and similar criminal activities that the police are determined to bring them to justice.

“The command is committed to getting rid of all criminal elements threatening the peace and security of the people of Jigawa State,” Shiisu said.

Cattle rustling has remained a persistent problem in northern Nigeria, especially in rural communities where livestock is a major source of livelihood. The criminal activity not only affects the economy of local farmers but also contributes to insecurity and violence in affected areas.

The Jigawa State Police Command has in recent months intensified its operations against cattle rustlers, armed robbers, and other criminal gangs, working closely with community leaders and local vigilantes.

The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State commended the officers involved in the operation for their swift response and effective coordination. He assured residents of the command’s readiness to continue protecting lives and property in all parts of the state.
