Illegal Buildings Risk Lives — Lagos APC Defends Sanwo-Olu’s Actions

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has defended the ongoing demolition of illegal buildings across the state, saying that no responsible government can overlook structures that pose risks to lives, public infrastructure, and the environment.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, stated that the demolitions were not politically motivated, but rather a necessary step to restore order, prevent disaster, and ensure the long-term development of the state.

Oladejo stressed that the enforcement actions are anchored on urban planning laws, and followed a lawful and transparent process, with repeated warnings and stakeholder engagements conducted before any demolition was carried out.

“Every measure taken by this government has been guided by due process and the public interest,” Oladejo said. “Lagos cannot afford to allow illegal developments to thrive, especially when they endanger infrastructure, waterways, and the environment.”

He noted that the government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, showed restraint and compassion, offering several extensions and opportunities for compliance before enforcing the laws.

“The demolition is a preventive measure, not an act of cruelty. It is meant to avert disaster, ensure order, and support our vision of a well-planned, safer Lagos,” he added.

In recent months, the Lagos State Government has been demolishing illegal structures across various parts of the state, especially in areas prone to flooding, environmental violations, or where structures encroach on drainage systems, coastal lines, and government-acquired lands.

The move has, however, attracted criticism from some quarters, with allegations of political witch-hunt and selective enforcement. But the APC insists that the operations are based on facts and legality, not sentiments or politics.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Lagos will not be lectured on governance by those who fail to understand that development requires discipline, consistency, and respect for the rule of law,” Oladejo said.

He explained that allowing illegal structures to remain would undermine the state’s efforts in achieving a modern, resilient megacity and frustrate urban planning goals.

The APC reiterated its full support for the Sanwo-Olu administration’s drive towards urban renewal, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure expansion, saying that these efforts will benefit all Lagosians in the long run.

“The Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to strategic urban renewal and lawful governance,” the statement continued. “These efforts are not about punishing anyone, but about ensuring that our city grows according to approved layouts and standards that protect everyone.”

Oladejo added that the government’s primary goal is to protect lives and property, encourage responsible urban growth, and create a better Lagos for current and future generations.

The Lagos APC urged residents to support the ongoing reforms and comply with planning and environmental regulations, warning that the state would not compromise safety and development because of political pressure or emotional blackmail.

“We urge Lagosians to see this as a wake-up call to respect laws guiding development in our city. There is no place for illegality or disregard for the environment in a growing city like Lagos,” Oladejo concluded.
