2026 WCQ: Nigeria Beat Lesotho, Face Benin Next

    Share

The Super Eagles of Nigeria kept their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive with a 2-1 victory over Lesotho on Friday evening in Uyo.

The match was a crucial one for the Nigerian side, who started the game in third place in Group C with 11 points — trailing South Africa and Benin Republic in the race to secure a ticket to the World Cup, which will be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Despite dominating possession in the first half, Nigeria was unable to find the net. Several chances went begging, and frustration began to build among the home fans as the team struggled to break down a resilient Lesotho defence.

However, the breakthrough came shortly after the restart. Nigeria was awarded a penalty, which captain William Troost-Ekong confidently converted to put the Super Eagles 1-0 ahead.

Not long after, debutant striker Akor Adams doubled the lead with a fine finish, marking his first appearance in national colours with a goal.

Lesotho managed to pull one back later in the game, capitalising on a defensive lapse by the Nigerian backline. But the Super Eagles held firm in the closing minutes to secure all three points.

The win means Nigeria now heads into their final group game against Benin Republic on Tuesday with qualification hopes still alive. The match will be played again in Uyo, where the Super Eagles will look to take advantage of home support.

Coach Eric Chelle and his men will be expected to deliver a strong performance, as only a win can keep their qualification chances alive depending on results from other teams in the group.

Nigeria is aiming to return to the FIFA World Cup after missing out on the 2022 edition in Qatar. The expanded 2026 tournament will feature 48 teams, giving African nations more slots  but competition remains tough.
