Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has been given a one-match touchline ban after being sent off during the dramatic 2-1 win against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on October 4.
The English Football Association (FA) confirmed that Maresca admitted to a charge of misconduct, following his emotional celebration after Willian Estevao scored a late winning goal deep into stoppage time.
Maresca, who is in his first season as Chelsea boss, ran down the touchline in excitement after the goal, which led to the referee showing him a red card in the 96th minute of the match.
As a result, the Italian manager will not be allowed on the sidelines when Chelsea travel to Nottingham Forest for their Premier League fixture on Saturday.
The 44-year-old later explained to the Italian media that his reaction was purely emotional and spontaneous.
“It was an instinctive reaction,” Maresca said. “But I think the red card was worth it.”
Chelsea currently sit mid-table in the Premier League and are pushing to qualify for European competitions next season. Maresca’s absence on the touchline could impact team coordination in a crucial away match against a strong Forest side.
The FA has warned managers across the league to maintain discipline, especially when celebrating goals, as part of its push for better behaviour on the pitch.
