Brazilian football legend, Zico, has declared former Super Eagles captain, Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, as the greatest African footballer of all time.
Zico made the statement during an appearance on John Obi Mikel’s ‘Obi One Podcast’ on Thursday, where he was asked to name the best African player he had ever seen.
“I like Okocha — a fantastic player. Number 10, Okocha,” the 71-year-old said.
“Eto’o, fantastic. George Weah, Drogba. But Okocha stands out.”
Zico, widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in football history, praised Okocha’s creativity, flair, and dribbling skills, describing his style of play as unique and entertaining.
He said Okocha’s ability to control the game and entertain fans made him unforgettable, even among other African greats like Samuel Eto’o, George Weah, and Didier Drogba.
“His style was fantastic,” Zico added.
Jay-Jay Okocha, now 52 years old, is considered one of Nigeria’s most talented footballers. He played 73 matches for the Super Eagles, scoring 14 goals, and was known for his dazzling footwork, vision, and free-kick mastery.
Okocha’s international career spanned from the early 1990s to the mid-2000s. He was a key part of the Nigerian team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He also represented Nigeria at three FIFA World Cups (1994, 1998, and 2002).
At club level, Okocha featured for top European sides, including Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in France and Bolton Wanderers in England, where he became a fan favourite for his flair and entertaining style.
While acknowledging the greatness of other African legends, Zico made it clear that Okocha stood out for his natural talent and joy of the game.
The Brazilian icon also used the opportunity to reaffirm his belief that his countryman, Pelé, remains the greatest footballer the world has ever seen.
