US Embassy Issues Alert Ahead of #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest

    Share

The United States Embassy in Abuja has warned its citizens to avoid parts of the Federal Capital Territory on Monday, October 20, 2025, due to a planned protest calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a security alert issued on Friday and published on the embassy’s website, US citizens were advised to stay away from protest areas, particularly around Eagle Square and the Central Business District, where demonstrations are expected to take place.

The embassy stated that while the protest is intended to be peaceful, there is a risk of violence, especially in case of confrontation between protesters and security operatives.

“There may be roadblocks, traffic congestion, and confrontations between police and protestors that could turn violent,” the alert warned.

Americans living in or visiting Abuja were also urged to limit their movement across the city throughout the day and to stay informed of developments through local media and official channels.

“The Embassy advises all U.S. citizens to avoid this area and to severely limit all movement throughout the city on Monday,” the statement added.

The planned protest is part of the ongoing campaign to demand the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021 over charges including treasonable felony. Kanu’s supporters, under the banner of #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, have often held protests locally and internationally.

Previous demonstrations linked to Kanu’s detention have, at times, led to clashes between security forces and protesters, especially in high-security zones like Abuja.

The embassy’s warning is a routine practice when potential risks arise and does not indicate a direct threat to US citizens. However, it underscores growing concerns about public order on the day of the protest.

Security agencies in Nigeria have not yet issued an official statement regarding the protest, but heavy security presence is expected in major parts of Abuja on Monday.
