A 37-year-old suspected drug baron, Onos Afokoghene, who has long been on the police watchlist for distributing hard drugs across Warri and nearby communities, has been arrested by the Delta State Police Command.
The arrest was carried out by officers from the Orerokpe Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Paul Oboware, following credible intelligence. The operation took place on October 10, 2025, at about 8:45pm in the Jeddo Community, located in Okpe Local Government Area.
Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the development in a statement released in Warri. He said the suspect had been operating as a major distributor of illicit drugs in Warri and surrounding towns.
“On 10th October 2025, at about 2045hrs, following credible intelligence, operatives of the Orerokpe Division arrested one Onos Afokoghene (male, aged 37 years), a notorious drug baron known for distributing large quantities of hard drugs within Warri and adjoining communities,” Edafe stated.
During the raid, police officers recovered a significant amount of illegal drugs and items used for drug distribution. These include:
3kg of Canadian Loud
10kg of Indian Hemp
24 litres of “Monkey Tail” (Indian hemp soaked in dry gin)
Several sachets of Tramadol in various dosages
Two POS machines, believed to be used for drug transactions
According to SP Edafe, CSP Oboware acted swiftly after receiving intelligence about ongoing drug activities in the area. “The DPO mobilised and led his patrol teams to a known drug flashpoint in Jeddo Community, where the suspect and other suspected hoodlums were engaged in selling and consuming illicit substances,” he said.
Upon sighting the police, the suspects attempted to flee. However, Afokoghene was apprehended after a brief chase. A thorough search of the scene confirmed the scale of the suspect’s drug operation.
The suspect is currently in police custody and undergoing interrogation as authorities work to uncover his wider drug distribution network.
“The investigation is ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the syndicate, including suppliers and buyers,” Edafe added.
The police have reiterated their commitment to ridding Delta State of drug-related crimes and have urged the public to continue providing useful information to assist in the fight against illegal drug trade.
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the command’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on the spread of hard drugs, which have contributed to rising youth addiction and crime rates in the region.
