A Nigerian-born British lawyer, Mrs. Margaret Obi, has been appointed as a High Court Judge in England and Wales, marking a historic milestone as the first African-born person to reach that position in the British judiciary.

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, announced the news in a congratulatory message shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday. His post, titled “Celebrating Excellence Beyond Borders,” praised Mrs. Obi’s appointment as a moment of pride for Nigeria and the African continent.

Peter Obi described the new judge’s rise as the product of “hard work, integrity, and professional excellence.” He noted that Mrs. Obi’s appointment reflected the global recognition of Nigerians who distinguish themselves through merit and dedication.

“Her professional journey of over 27 years in legal practice and seven years in judicial service stands as a testimony to her competence and commitment,” Obi said.

The former governor also took a moment to clarify that Mrs. Margaret Obi is not his wife, explaining that his spouse goes by the name Mrs. Margaret Peter-Obi. The clarification came amid public confusion due to their shared surname.

Obi commended the new judge’s success as a reminder of what Nigerians can achieve when given the opportunity and right environment to excel.

“Mrs. Obi’s accomplishment underscores the outstanding potential of Nigerians across the world. It is also a call to action for us to build a country that nurtures such excellence within our own borders,” he said.

Mrs. Margaret Obi’s appointment adds to the growing list of Nigerians making history in international institutions, particularly in law, medicine, and technology. Over the years, several Nigerians in the diaspora have risen to top positions in global organizations, earning recognition for their professional achievements.

Her new role as a High Court Judge places her among the most senior judges in England and Wales, responsible for handling major civil and criminal cases. The High Court is one of the key divisions of the judiciary in the United Kingdom, and appointments to the position are made by the King on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Lord Chancellor.

Nigerians at home and abroad have continued to celebrate the appointment, describing it as a symbol of hope and proof that excellence knows no borders.
