The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a Chinese national in connection with the recent explosion that occurred at a CCTV camera shop on Kodesho Street, Ikeja, last week.
The police confirmed that the suspect, identified as Joe Gu, was taken into custody on Saturday, October 25, 2025, as part of investigations into the blast, which was reportedly caused by an improvised explosive device (IED).
According to police sources, detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, arrested the suspect around 1:00 p.m. at his residence located at No. A11, Bila Vista Estate, Banana Island, Ikoyi.
The arrest followed ongoing discreet investigations after the complainant in the case named the Chinese businessman as a possible mastermind of the explosion.
“The arrest was made after the complainant mentioned the suspect during interrogation as someone who might have been involved in the incident,” a police source disclosed.
Business Dispute Behind Attack
Preliminary findings, according to investigators, revealed that the suspect and the complainant had a previous business relationship that went sour over a decade ago.
“It was gathered that the two had a business disagreement in 2013, which led to the end of their partnership,” the source said.
The police further learnt that following the fallout, the suspect allegedly issued threats to frustrate the complainant’s operations.
“During the dispute, the suspect reportedly vowed to disrupt the complainant’s business,” the source added.
Although the motive behind the explosion has not been officially confirmed, investigators believe the past dispute may be linked to the incident.
Suspect in Custody
The Lagos Police Command has confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody at the SCID, Yaba, while investigations continue to determine his exact role in the blast.
Police spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin (if desired, could be referenced — though not in original text) could confirm or restate the command’s assurance that full details will be made public as soon as the investigation progresses.
“The command assures the public that it will provide updates as new information emerges,” an official said. “The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to uncovering the truth behind the explosion and ensuring justice is served.”
The explosion, which occurred last week at a CCTV equipment store on Kodesho Street, near the Ikeja computer village area, caused panic among residents and traders. Fortunately, no lives were lost, though property and goods were reportedly damaged.
Security operatives have since tightened surveillance in the area while forensic experts continue examining materials recovered from the scene.
