Vigilantes Stop IPOB Attack in Anambra, Kill Suspected Gunman

    Share

A suspected member of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), was killed on Monday in a fierce gun battle with local vigilantes in Ezinifite community, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m., when about 15 armed men reportedly crossed from neighbouring Imo State through Amalum Village with the apparent aim of attacking the community.

Members of the Agunechamba Vigilante Group, who first encountered the gunmen, said the attackers were immediately intercepted, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. During the shootout, one of the assailants was neutralised, while others fled into nearby bushes, reportedly wounded.

“We noticed armed men approaching our community early in the morning. We confronted them, and a gunfight ensued. One of the attackers was killed, and we recovered a pump-action rifle from him,” a vigilante leader said.

The body of the deceased suspect was later taken to the Ezinifite mortuary. Security operatives from the Anambra State Police Command and tactical teams were deployed to the area, but the fleeing gunmen had already escaped before their arrival.

Authorities said the community has been cordoned off, and joint operations between security forces and local vigilante groups are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects.

Security sources commended the vigilante group for their swift and courageous action, urging residents to stay calm and continue cooperating with security agencies to maintain peace.

Anambra State has faced repeated threats from armed groups, including IPOB/ESN, whose activities have included attacks on security personnel and local communities, especially along borders with neighbouring states. The group, which was proscribed by the Federal Government, has repeatedly clashed with both state security forces and local vigilante groups tasked with community protection.

Vigilante groups like the Agunechamba have been crucial in curbing attacks in rural areas where police presence is limited. These groups often work closely with the state police command to protect residents and prevent infiltration by armed gangs.

Residents of Ezinifite expressed relief at the swift response of the vigilante group, noting that their action likely prevented wider casualties and destruction in the community.

State security officials reiterated their commitment to protecting life and property, urging citizens to report suspicious movements and cooperate with ongoing security operations.

“We commend the vigilance group for acting decisively. Residents should remain calm, go about their daily activities safely, and continue supporting security agencies. This partnership is key to lasting peace,” a police source said.
