‘I Wanted to Move Abroad After Mo’Hits Ended’ – Don Jazzy

Popular Nigerian music producer and Mavin Records boss, Don Jazzy, has revealed that he almost gave up on music after the breakup of the once-famous Mo’Hits Records, which he co-founded with singer D’banj.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Don Jazzy said the end of Mo’Hits in 2012 was one of the lowest points of his life and career. He admitted that he considered leaving Nigeria and quitting the music industry entirely.

“When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad,” he said. “But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me.”

Mo’Hits Records, founded in 2004 by Don Jazzy and D’banj, dominated the Nigerian music scene with hit songs such as “Oliver Twist,” “Why Me,” and “Booty Call.” The label was home to some of the biggest stars of the time, including Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince.

However, internal disagreements between the co-founders led to the label’s collapse in 2012, a breakup that shocked fans and shook the industry.

Following the split, Don Jazzy decided to start afresh, establishing Mavin Records later that same year. The new label not only revived his career but also became one of Africa’s most successful music powerhouses.

Over the years, Mavin Records has produced some of Nigeria’s top music stars, including Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Di’Ja, and Rema, who has achieved international fame.

The label’s current lineup includes Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Crayon, Magixx, Boy Spyce, Bayanni, Johnny Drille, and DJ Big N.

Mavin’s success has earned it global recognition, leading to Universal Music Group’s majority investment in Mavin Global in 2024 — a move that further expanded the label’s reach across Africa and beyond.

Don Jazzy said his experience with Mo’Hits taught him valuable lessons about resilience, leadership, and loyalty in the entertainment business.

“That experience made me stronger,” he said. “Since then, nothing has ever been able to break me.”

Now regarded as one of the most influential figures in African music, Don Jazzy continues to mentor young talents and push Nigerian music to the world stage.
