The Wike-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that it will hold Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings tomorrow, signalling a new phase in the ongoing internal struggle within the party.
The faction recently appointed Abdulrahman as Acting National Chairman and Senator Mao Ohuabunwa as BoT Chairman, a move that has intensified the leadership dispute between the Wike-led group and the faction loyal to Governor Bala Damagum.
The announcement comes shortly after the Damagum-led PDP held its National Convention in Ibadan over the weekend. The convention was marked by controversy, including the summarily expulsion of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister and several other party members, highlighting the growing rift within the party.
The Wike faction has expressed concerns over what it describes as undemocratic practices by the Damagum-led leadership, arguing that key decisions, including appointments and disciplinary actions, were made without proper consultation of party stakeholders.
Speaking through a party spokesperson, the Wike group said tomorrow’s BoT and NEC meetings aim to restore order, reaffirm party structures, and plan ahead for upcoming electoral activities. The faction has also indicated that it intends to clarify leadership roles and issue directives regarding ongoing disputes over party offices and control of resources.
The Damagum-led faction, meanwhile, defended the decisions taken at its National Convention, claiming that all actions were in line with party constitution and electoral guidelines. Party sources say that the expelled members were accused of undermining the party’s unity and violating internal rules.
As Nigeria’s political landscape becomes increasingly competitive, both factions of the PDP are expected to engage in strategic manoeuvres to assert dominance, with tomorrow’s BoT and NEC meetings seen as a critical step for the Wike faction to consolidate its position.
The outcome of these meetings could influence future party decisions, candidate endorsements, and alignment with national political strategies, making it a closely watched event by political stakeholders, media and party supporters nationwide.
