A House of Representatives member from Zamfara State was reportedly attacked by angry youths on Wednesday, who stoned and beat him over alleged poor performance and lack of leadership in his constituency. The incident took place during Governor Dauda Lawal’s visit to Dansadau in Maru Local Government Area.
According to eyewitnesses, the youths from the Dansadau Emirate confronted the lawmaker, accusing him of failing to deliver on promises made to his constituents. Videos circulating online show a large crowd surrounding the lawmaker, shouting and pelting him with stones while security personnel struggled to contain the situation.
Despite the presence of armed Nigerian security operatives, who tried to maintain order during the governor’s visit, the youths reportedly overpowered them to carry out the attack.
One resident of Dansadau, who preferred to remain anonymous, described the scene as chaotic. “It was a tense situation. The lawmaker arrived with the governor, and suddenly, the youths started shouting at him. They threw stones and were shouting about how he has not done anything for the community. Security tried to stop them, but the crowd was too large and too angry,” the witness said.
Videos circulating on social media show the lawmaker attempting to shield himself from the stones while being escorted by security personnel. Members of the community could be heard chanting, expressing frustration at what they described as years of unfulfilled promises and lack of development in the area.
Another eyewitness said, “They accused him of not using his position to help the people. They said roads, schools, and healthcare facilities in our area are neglected. They were very angry and determined to make their voices heard.”
The attack comes amid growing dissatisfaction among some constituents in Zamfara State over perceived poor performance by their elected representatives. Many residents in rural communities have expressed frustration over the lack of development in sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, despite years of representation at the federal level.
Dansadau, part of Maru Local Government Area, has historically faced challenges such as inadequate road networks, limited healthcare facilities, and inconsistent access to potable water. Some community leaders argue that elected officials have not prioritized the urgent needs of the people, contributing to a growing sense of disillusionment.
During the incident, security personnel from the Nigerian Police and other agencies were deployed to protect both the lawmaker and Governor Lawal during the visit. Reports indicate that no fatalities were recorded, although some minor injuries were sustained by both the lawmaker and a few youths.
The governor’s office has not issued an official statement regarding the incident as of Wednesday evening. However, local sources say that security agencies are investigating the attack and reviewing measures to prevent a repeat of such occurrences in the future.
A police spokesperson in Maru Local Government Area confirmed that the situation was under control. “We were on the ground to ensure security, and while the situation escalated momentarily, no lives were lost. Investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the attack,” the spokesperson said.
The PDP lawmaker, whose identity has not been officially disclosed in reports, is understood to have left the scene following the attack. Sources close to him suggest that he intends to meet with community leaders to address grievances and reassure constituents of his commitment to improving local development.
Public reactions to the incident have been mixed. While some citizens condemned the violent approach, others argued that it reflected genuine frustration over the lack of progress in their communities. Social media users debated the event, with some calling for peaceful dialogue and others supporting the youths’ demand for accountability.
The attack on the lawmaker could have broader implications for political representation in Zamfara State. Analysts suggest that heightened public scrutiny and citizen activism may influence upcoming elections, with voters more likely to support candidates who demonstrate tangible results and responsiveness to community needs.
Moreover, the incident highlights the growing trend of youths in Nigeria demanding accountability from their leaders. Across the country, communities have increasingly used protests, social media campaigns, and other forms of civic engagement to hold public officials responsible for governance and development.
While the violent nature of the attack is widely condemned, it reflects deeper challenges facing local governance and public trust in elected representatives. Experts argue that lawmakers must prioritize constituent needs and engage in open dialogue to prevent similar incidents in the future.
